Billy's eyes brightened as they swept the big sugar-bush. Many a spicy spring night had he enjoyed here, "sugarin' off"—he and Teacher Stanhope. The brightness faded from his eyes and his lip quivered. Never again would the man who was boy-friend to him point out the frost-cleared stars that swam low down above the maples and describe to him their wonders. "And you mean to tell me that she hatches the egg laid by the mean, bad black bird, Billy?" "Be here," said he, "on Saturday next. It may be that I'll give you the berth. No more words. Off with you!" "I guess your Dad don't think much of us folks down here, does he?" Billy asked. Unable to endure the thought Stanhope sprang to his feet and lifting his arms high shouted with all his strength, "Billy, Billy boy!".
